IDM-style download manager, free forever

Desktop App PythonPySide6SQLitelibtorrent

The problem

Popular download managers are paywalled, bloated, or both. The goal was an IDM-style downloader that is fast, modern and free forever.

What was built

A Windows download manager with segmented downloading across up to 32 connections, pause and resume that survive restarts, a download queue, categories, SQLite history, system tray and notifications, torrent support, a browser extension, proxy support and a mini download popup.

Segmented download manager with up to 32 connections, Range probe, pause and resume across restarts, queue, categories, SQLite history, tray, torrents, browser extension, proxy support and a mini popup.

Challenges & solutions

Reliable pause and resume across restarts meant tracking every segment's state in SQLite, so an interrupted download continues exactly where it stopped — even after the app or the machine restarts.

Outcome

A free-forever download manager for Windows, shipped as a standard installer, with no paywall.
